Paamonim Hope for survivors of domestic violence

Paamonim Hope for survivors of domestic violence

This program offers individual support and group workshops for women who are survivors of domestic violence, living in shelters or transitional apartments in preparation for independence. The purpose of the program is to prevent a return to their abusive partners for economic reasons, concerned that they cannot support themselves and their children.

Paamonim organization assists families in Israel by providing knowledge and tools for proper financial management. In recent years, the organization has expanded its activities and provides specialized solutions for unique populations, including women victims of violence staying in shelters, transitional apartments, and community apartments. As part of our activities, we assist in their financial rehabilitation and support them as they embark on a new and independent financial path.

Every year, about 700 women and 1,000 children are treated in shelters in Israel.

Women staying in shelters have experienced extreme violence and need immediate protection and treatment, away from the source of danger (the violent partner). Most of them fled from life-threatening situations. In the shelters, the supporting team try to help them survive the crisis, gather strength, and leave the shelter strengthened and ready to move on to the next chapter in their lives.

Most women who have experienced physical and emotional violence have also experienced financial abuse. Many of them are excluded from the household’s financial management and therefore lack the tools and knowledge to manage finances independently and achieve long-term financial stability. Financial difficulty is what leads many women to return to violent relationships.

Therefore, for women to succeed in breaking the cycle of violence, it is essential for them to acquire the tools and knowledge they lack in the financial area. To succeed in this task, it is first necessary to lower the level of anxiety and apprehension that women have about finances in general (an area that intimidates many women who are not victims of violence). Then, when they are physically and mentally available, a process of learning the financial language and acquiring new tools and habits should be undertaken, which will ultimately allow them to sever the financial dependence on the violent partner.

Paamonim’s financial guidance sometimes continues even after the women leave the shelter and are integrated into the community.

In addition to individual guidance, Paamonim provides a more comprehensive response to women in shelters through group workshops within the shelters for women, as well as specialized training for professionals within the shelters and in the community.

“I believe that helping the women we accompany to ‘stand on their own feet’ financially means recognizing their ability to create change in their sense of capability and functioning. This success can save lives, theirs and their children’s, both in terms of quality of life and life itself,” says a Paamonim volunteer in shelters.
